Hi $first_name$,
Wes Seastron is reaching out to help Diane and her family in Hawaii. Below is his recent post on Facebook. If you have questions please email him at: wes@seastrom.net
LCHS Class of 1972,
As some of you may know, our classmate Diane Fish Countryman and her husband Bill have lived in Lahaina for over 37 years, raising 3 now-adult children.
They and their home were miraculously spared from last month’s devastating fire that swept thru their historic town. They had just minutes to evacuate and were stuck in the traffic gridlock of the town’s main street trying to outrun the rapidly approaching flames. As one point,, they felt they might need to jump into the ocean to survive, as others had to do. They are luckier than many, as unfortunately several of their close friends and at least one neighbor did not survive, and most of their neighborhood is completely destroyed.
Last week they were dealt a 2nd cruel blow. Although no residents are allowed to enter their neighborhood without a police escort due to the ongoing recovery effort, lack of any utilities and hazardous material exposure, and the assurance that the National Guard had “locked down” and secured the area, their home was burglarized and anything of value was taken - All her jewelry, coin collection, clothes, bicycles, surfboards, etc. The most devastating loss? The gold cross her recently deceased 101-year-old mother was wearing when she passed was taken. In addition to the physical loss, this act of violation of her home will be hard to overcome.
Diane is a proud and private person, but she and her family need our support. It appears they won’t be able to return home for at least a year. For their burned-out neighbors, it will be longer, if ever.
I am asking all of you to please consider making a generous “support gift” of any amount to Diane and Bill using this Venmo link: https://account.venmo.com/u/Diane-Countryman-2
If you don’t have the free Venmo app on your cell phone or computer, clicking on the above link will bring you to the Venmo website or app store where you can sign up. You may need to input the last 4 digits of Diane’s mobile number (“5884”) for security purposes. Her email is DiMaui@aol.com.
If you are like me, you prefer to help victims of natural disasters directly rather than donating to large organizations such as the Red Cross where only a very small percentage of your donation actually goes to those that need it the most. No, you won’t get a tax deduction doing it this way, but in my opinion it’s the right thing to do if you are able.
However, for those who prefer to donate to a tax-deductible charitable 501(c)3 organization doing good work in Lahaina, Diane suggests her church’s Harvest Maui Relief Fund: https://harvest.org/maui-relief-fund.
Last year, many of our LCHS Class of 1972 classmates gathered together for our 50-year reunion. We reminisced, told some stories, and rekindled friendships. To me, we are ‘Ohana. Please help Diane and her family if you are able. It will be very much appreciated.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with me at:
